fumbling towards ecstasy

the stoplight at 29th and burlingame
sends her right on red, headed for
home. the march sun and southern
breeze whispering
Elsewhere is anywhere is nowhere is
better than here,
repeating her mantra of Fear,
denials & half-truths.

with the window down and the radio up,
Plenty of chances for foolish reverie.

three months of Ice
convinced this girl in the dark’s
ability to swallow the light. it’s easier
to assume that night will never end than
to Wait for sunrise. no matter her
pessimism is foiled every single day.

she’d pray to sweet Mary if she
thought she was Good Enough
to count the beads.

instead, she’ll let the latest not-quite
Possession slip away
like home-made Ice Cream in summer sun.

The planet speeds along in a lopsided
Circle, spinning and pinning her
to the ground. she doesn’t
need to Hold On—

he won’t let her go.
