Commencement Redress
First blooms fade green, another May.
Semesters end in parent whimpers, senior bangs.
Years worth dust
on black cap and gown and scholar’s hood—
more papers due, tests waiting multiple rights, wrongs.
That we should
see what’s missing is meaning, some translation
of this ancient affair, odd-formed here at the end
all circumstance and pomp
for praising, acclaiming hundred’s matriculation.
Now, out! Be gone! Go conquer the dandy dollar
for Unc Sam.
He’s wanting a few good women and men too
for his bidding do, in-country or abroad
the flag a-flapping.
Make momma proud and poppa too.
Learn them lessons. Join life’s fray of learned voices, good,
singing always first blooms fading soon.
