sleeping together

she’s not ready for this good-bye
as she drives
away from the man she left
in her bed

a full moon sinks in the west
while an orange horizon
glows with the lie
of a new beginning

she fools with the radio,
trying to spot the moon in her
mirror, hoping the truth she missed last
night can now be found there

she thinks of him lying asleep
wonders what he will remember
when he opens his eyes

she marvels that sleep comes so easily
for him
while she spent the night
eyes wide open
listening to the dark
waiting for time

he won’t be there when she returns
perhaps a note
another promise
that is his habit

she’ll let it go
because he needs her more
than she needs him

for now
that is enough
